Taking a Closer Look: Sherman Oaks

Los Angeles is a sprawling city, with 88 cities and 140 unincorporated areas. Within the City of Angels are some truly fantastic places to live — cities with high-quality schools, developing businesses, community events, and more! In this recurring blog series, I aim to explore the latest happenings in cities across the southland. Next on our list is a wonderful city: Sherman Oaks.

History of the Area

Sherman Oaks is part of the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, founded in 1927. It is nestled northwest of downtown Los Angeles,  due north of Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. The city was first developed by General Moses Hazeltine Sherman, a partner of the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company. That company subdivided 1,000 acres of land that would become Sherman Oaks.

The city is known for its affluent residents, including a number of actors and celebrities. Noteworthy past and current residents include Paula Abdul, Jennifer Aniston, James Dean, Clint Eastwood, Demi Lovato, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Currently, its population sits at 6,529, and the average age (according to the 2010 Census) is 49 years old.

Casa Vega: New Patio Seating!

An old-school, landmark restaurant in Sherman Oaks recently adjusted to the times in midst of the global pandemic. Casa Vega debuted a festive, open-air dining space at the end of July. Additionally, the beloved eatery is now accepting reservations for the first time in its 64-year history.

The popular restaurant is following suit with what numerous other establishments have been forced to provide to meet the government requirements. Plus, diners can enjoy the full menu on the patio, including two new summer cocktails: Grapefruit Rose Sangria and the Pepino Vodka Soda.

In addition to spaced seating, the patio will undergo thorough sanitation between lunch and dinner service and limit reusable items by using eco-friendly bamboo cutlery.

Sherman Oaks 2.0

In June 2014 the JohnHart Real Estate family grew by adding a brand new office in Sherman Oaks. For years agents used it as a home base for operations in the region. When we began our journey in Sherman Oaks over 6 years ago we loved it so much that we coined our own name for it “Shoaks.” More recently we have decided to move the office location. Construction of our newest office is well underway, and we are expecting it to be open and operational very soon!

Even longtime residents of Los Angeles don’t often know about the cute nooks within our sprawling city. The Village at Sherman Oaks is one such nook, recognized as a wonderful destination for shopping, dining, and enjoying the outdoors with walkable streets. You’ll find Yoga studios, delicious sit-down restaurants and fast-casual options, and salons in this lovely area of Sherman Oaks.

Whether you are a native Angeleno, a newcomer to the area, or somewhere in between — there is plenty to do, see, and experience in the charming city of Sherman Oaks. But don’t take our word for it, see it for yourself!
