Andrew P. Mooney, head of Walt Disney Company’s Consumer Products, abruptly resigns.
After serving as chairman of Disney Consumer Products for nearly 12 years, Mr. Mooney has resigned. He informed staff members of his resignation in an email, which was released by Disney.
“Today I informed Bob Iger that I’ve made the difficult decision to resign,” Mr. Mooney wrote in the e-mail, referring to Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive.
Mr. Mooney, 56, added, “I thank Bob for his understanding in my desire to pursue other ambitions as well as his guidance and friendship.”
Some of Mr. Mooney’s accomplishments at Disney included him creating the Disney Princess franchise. The Disney Princess franchise now generates $4 billion in retail sales worldwide annually. He also was responsible for the considerable improvements to the quality of Disney merchandise. These developments lead to the Disney Stores in North America to significantly improve.
Prior to Mr. Mooney joining the Disney Company in December 1999, he served as chief marketing officer at Nike for 20 years.
The New York Times reported that Mr. Mooney said it was the “perfect time” to take his experience at Disney and, before that, at shoe and apparel maker Nike “into a leadership role with another organization and corporate boards.” People close to Mr. Mooney said he desired to run his own company.
