Where to Start
Every single restaurant featured has a jaw-dropping and drool-worthy food photo on the explore page of BlackRestaurantWeek.com, so it’s nearly impossible to choose where to begin. So, we’ve highlighted a few of our recommended options to get your decision wheel turning.
1) L.A. Grind Coffee & Tea Bar
Location: 1412 S Redondo Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
If you’re anything like us, starting your day off with coffee is a must. L.A. Grind Coffee & Tea not only offers a variety of coffee and tea but also breakfast and lunch with both vegan and vegetarian options. With a complete 5-stars on Yelp, this place is certainly worth a shot. They brew their own coffee and teas which are also available in other stores throughout Los Angeles – find out which locations by visiting their website. Good news – they also cater!
Their Black Restaurant Week menu consists of many yummy options including a Lavender Latte and an Ebony & Ivory Ice Blended Coffee using Ghiradelli Sauce (wowza)!
2) BlaqHaus NoHo
Location: 11671 Victory Blvd, North Hollywood, CA
We can vouch for this one as one of our personal faves. Located in North Hollywood, this hot spot “offers a Southern Cuisine and Southern Hospitality” according to their website. Their Black Restaurant Week Menu, available here, features some of their best-loved items including their famous Mac n Cheese known as the “Triple Mac Daddy”. Other standouts include a Catfish Po’boy and a “Better than Popeye’z” Sandwich. Brace yourself for some unmatched southern cooking with Cajun flair.
3) Flavors from Afar
Location: 1046 S Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA
This unique restaurant is a must-try. Established in 2018, Flavors from Afar “is a social enterprise that employs former refugee chefs in Los Angeles and Orange County”, according to their website. They are an extension of the Tia Foundation. Proceeds support family and youth programs on which the foundation is centered upon. Unlike most Angeleno restaurants, this one features a rotating menu. Despite the change – one thing remains the same – the quality. Flavors from Afar boasts a 4.9 rating on Google and a full 5-stars on Yelp. We are not exaggerating when we say reviews RAVE about the food and flavor palate. Yelp reviewer Chase P. pronounced, “Highly, highly recommend coming here. Very unique and different.” He continued, “I’ve been here twice within a couple of weeks and each time I was just amazed by how delicious the food is.”
If you’re willing to expand your horizons and indulge in multiple cultures in one collective dining experience then this is an excellent place to try. The Black Restaurant Week dishes include Sambusas, a Somalian specialty, as well as Palestinian Cucumber Salad and Eritrean Beef Tibs.
4) Baba’s Vegan Café
Location: Leimert Park Village
This black-owned business is extraordinary for many reasons. Not only does it exclusively offer vegan-friendly cuisine, but it is also a thriving pop-up restaurant with a hefty following on Instagram. Despite, not having a permanent location. You can find this showstopper in Leimert Park on Sundays from 12-5pm. If you’ve got plans this Sunday – cancel them – or at the very least carve out some time for this Pop-Up oozing with flavor. Specializing in African diasporic cuisine, Baba’s is wildly known for its delicious Jamaican-style veggie patties. For more information regarding their participation in restaurant week, visit here.
5) Leberry Bakery and Donut
Location: 445 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA
Rounding off our list we of course had to include a dessert option to appease all the sweet-tooths out there. Another unique business– this is a plant-based bakery and donut shop based out of Pasadena. The donut variety = endless. Some mouthwatering flavors that caught our eye were their plant-based espresso yeast donut, sprinkle cake batter, Madagascar vanilla berry, crème brûlée, apple fritter, peanut butter jelly and their almond-cholate. Find more options here. Established in 2018, Lêberry Bakery & Donut’s mission is to execute their vision to introduce America to a “health-conscious living by integrating sustainable plant-based ingredients to facilitate food kinetics in and our of our body – in a healthy way.” From the looks of it – mission accomplished.
