April 2021 promises some noteworthy must-see movies ahead. Although movie options are more scarce for April, the options available still guarantee many hours of watch-worthy entertainment. Be sure to also check out the movies that debuted in March, if you haven’t already.

1) Concrete Cowboy

Actor, Golden Globe winner, 4-time Emmy nominee, and former “Sexiest Man Alive” Idris Elba stars in this upcoming Netflix film alongside Stranger Things breakout star Caleb McLaughlin. The plot of this film is just as peculiarly fascinating as its title, Concrete Cowboy. A teenager (Caleb McLaughlin) discovers the world of urban horseback riding thanks to his estranged father (Idris Elba) after his mom sends him to Philadelphia for the summer. This coming-of-age drama vows to evoke emotion as we follow the troublesome story of this father-and-son duo in their struggle to understand one another.
2) Without Remorse
Release Date: April 30th, 2021

From Tom Clancy, the author of “Rainbow Six”, comes this action thriller film starring Michael B. Jordan. This book-turned-movie could not be more packed with action from start to finish. The trailer alone does not pull any punches as John Clark (Michael B. Jordan) is unmistakably out for revenge. As the title indicates, he surely is “Without Remorse”. There will be bloodshed. Political disaccord abounds. There will be shootouts, explosions, and of course, there will be the promising performance of Emmy-nominated actor Michael B. Jordan.
The plot centers around U.S. Navy Seal John Clark who is seeking justice for the murder of his wife and unborn child. Russian soldiers killed his family, and anyone with a hand in their death is subject to Clark’s relentless disdain. Revenge is his mission, and boy does he deliver. Add this action-packed film to your must-watch list for April 2021. This one starts streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video app on April 30th.
3) Thunder Force
Release Date: April 9th, 2021

Time to break up this dark list with a forthright comedy featuring two impressively decorated female actresses. Oscar winner and Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer joins forces with two-time Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy in this knee-slapping comedy film: Thunder Force. Ben Falcone, McCarthy’s husband, directs this superhero comedy all about a reunited friendship, the city of Chicago, and superpowers.
The plot follows scientist Emily Stanton (Octavia Spencer) and her former best-friend Lydia (Melissa McCarthy). The pair are bonded together once again when Lydia visits Emily and accidentally gives herself the ONLY dose of Emily’s formula that delivers incredible superpowers to ordinary people. With no other choice, Emily trains her childhood friend to use her new powers for good by way of fending off crime and evil that has plagued Chicago. Catch these two hilarious, top-tier actresses in Thunder Force, releasing April 9th on Netflix.
4) Mortal Kombat
Release Date: April 16th

You’ll need to get off your couch for this April 2021 flick. This highly-anticipated blockbuster film is coming to theaters on April 16th. As you may have already guessed, this film is based on the wildly admired Mortal Kombat video game released in 1992. The fans of this epic game have remained loyal and maintained its popularity ever since. All of the characters in the film mirror what gamers are already ever-so familiar with. For those not as in-tune with video games, Mortal Kombat is a mysterious, intergalactic tournament of ancient martial arts. Competitors can only enter this honorary, deadly competition by invite.
With an R rating, this film is loaded with action, and of course, plenty of violence. Although of note, Mortal Kombat film producer Todd Garner told The Verge the movie’s violence is “like Bambi” compared to the actual video game. He explained that by comparison, the film may be considered G-rated to players accustomed to the over-the-top violence present in the Mortal Kombat video game. Nevertheless, the filmmakers assure that despite the “realistic tone”, this movie coming to big screens near you on April 16th, is still a must-watch.
5) Voyagers
Release Date: April 9th

This science fiction film, brought to us by Lionsgate, hits theaters on April 9th. Teenagers bred for intelligence and obedience are passengers on a shuttle in space, on a long voyage to reach another planet to inhabit. An experienced crew member, Richard (Colin Farrell), leads the voyage. The multi-generational mission comes with plenty of twists and turns. Trouble boils to the surface when the teens discover they are being controlled by substances being slipped into their food and drinks. When they cease to take these drugs, all hell breaks loose in the space shuttle’s confined area. Richard struggles to protect the teens from themselves and all the complicated nuances that arise as they begin to experience new sensations and emotions they were previously blocked from experiencing. This thrilling new sci-fi is available in theaters on April 9th, 2021.
