Heart Set on Tudor-Style Homes? Here’s What Buyers Love (and What They Can’t Stand)

We’ve discussed LA’s diversity of architectural styles at great length on this blog. But one design niche we’ve overlooked has earned a bit of a cult following in the region thanks to its rich history, distinct character, and sophisticated take on storybook charm. We’re referring to the ornate, antiquated Tudor-style homes of Los Angeles. But if you want a fairytale ending with a Tudor dream home, you’ll need to consider a few practicalities that come with owning one of these visually stunning houses.

What Buyers Tend to Love About Tudor-Style Homes

Architectural Distinction

It’s hard to mistake Tudor-style homes with any other design style. Their distinct architecture is characterized by steeply-pitched gable roofs, ornately decorative half-timbering, looming narrow windows, and detailed chimneys. These classic, almost fable-esque hallmarks evoke a romance of the Olde World rarely seen in contemporary building designs. For buyers prioritizing a home that has personality and a story, a Tudor home is difficult to top.

Historic Craftsmanship

The majority of the Tudor-style homes you’ll find around Los Angeles were built during the city’s housing boom that spanned the 1920s and ‘30s. This was a time of premium construction materials and quality, time-tested craftsmanship, another selling point of these properties that emphasizes they’re more than a pretty facade. The build quality is evident in common Tudor home features like exposed wooden beams, custom millwork, and antique fireplaces.

The Neighborhood Factor

When searching for homes built in a Tudor style, your best bets are coveted neighborhoods with history, like Hancock Park, Windsor Square, and Atwater Village. These communities are desirable on their own, boasting manicured landscaping, historic aesthetics, and easy access to cultural amenities. All of this helps to support property values in the area. Because of this, buyers tend to view Tudor homes as savvy long-term investments, reinforced by their scarcity and distinct appearance.

Close and Cozy Layouts

If you’re a big fan of the spacious open layouts so popular in modern construction, a Tudor-style home may not be to your tastes. Tudor houses favor layouts that prioritize intimacy, with cozy alcoves and rich, warm built-in custom details. This leans into an emotional sense that can be a real draw for like-minded buyers.

What Buyers Fear About Tudor-Style Homes

Demanding Maintenance

Those steep roofs, textured facades, and historic construction materials that give Tudor-style homes so much character also make them that much more difficult to maintain. A steeply pitched roof is going to command a higher labor cost when compared to more modern roofing styles. Likewise, original construction materials, such as cedar shakes and original stucco, demand a higher effort for effective preservation.

Energy Efficiency

Modern building standards weren’t in place when LA’s historic Tudor-style homes were built. Therefore, most rely on older plumbing designs, outdated electrical systems, primitive insulation, and basic single-pane windows that fall short of today’s standards of energy efficiency. Not only can this lead to a somewhat uncomfortable experience during certain times of the year, but it can also result in higher utility bills and maybe even some urgency when considering pricey renovations.

Close and Cozy Layouts (Again)

We mentioned the constricted layout of a Tudor home as a positive, but it also could be a negative, depending on a buyer’s perspective. Buyers who favor wide, flowing open concept floorplans won’t likely feel claustrophobic in Tudor-style homes, but they may not be thrilled with a tighter space that they find less functional than they expected. There’s always the option to renovate for a more modern flow, but even if a buyer doesn’t get blocked by historic property restrictions, the process can get expensive very quickly.

Steep Competition

It’s not every day that one of LA’s rare Tudor-style homes hits the market. So, when one does, it’s safe to say that competition will be steep. And, for the Tudor houses kept in better condition, that competition only intensifies. Buyers on a budget may not have the salt to enter the kinds of bidding wars that a coveted Tudor home will undoubtedly inspire.

It’s easy to say that there’s no other architectural style in Los Angeles quite like the Tudor aesthetic. It’s why, when buyers set their heart on Tudor-style homes, it can be difficult for them to settle for anything else. But prospective owners must be realistic about balancing this charm with the truth about maintenance, layout, and long-term costs. Still, with conscientious planning, it can be immensely rewarding to be a part of the diverse design landscape of the city with one of its few Tudor homes.
