Palm Springs Animal Shelter is throwing a Clear the Shelter event this weekend. Thanks to a partnership with local restaurant, Boozehounds, the shelter will waive all weekend adoption fees. This means you can adopt a furry friend for FREE.
Event Details
The Palm Springs Clear the Shelters event will take place on August 12th and 13th at 4575 E Mesquite Ave., Palm Springs, CA 92264. The shelter will be open from 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, August 12th. The following day, on Sunday August 13th it will be open for one less hour from 11 am to 5 pm.
According to an article by Patch.com, “the Friends of Palm Springs Animal Shelter has also adopted an animal-friendly menu policy by providing vegan meals at all its events.” What does that mean for you? There will not only be a plethora of animals waiting to be loved, but also vegan meals waiting to be eaten. What are you waiting for? Mark your calendars, Palm Springs!
Why the rush?
The Palm Springs Animal Shelter is well over-capacity. Some kennels are not only doubled-up with two pets, but in some cases even tripled-up with three pets per kennel. In order to create an acceptable living environment for these animals, the bulk of them need to be adopted ASAP to clear up some space. It’s crucial to point out that Palm Springs Animal Shelter is the only public shelter operating under a no-kill philosophy in the Coachella Valley. This lends to the fact that they take a humane and compassionate approach to caring for animals.
The Adoption Process
Palm Springs Animal Shelter adoptions are on a first-come, first-serve basis. According to their website, during your visit, team members will assist you with the meet and greet between you and your potential pet. Once you’ve made your decision, the adoption team will help you finalize the process. Below are some adoption policies to be aware of:
- You must be 18 years or older to adopt
- You must provide a valid photo ID
- Residents of Palm Springs must purchase a dog license with a dog adoption
- PSAS reserves the right to refuse an adoption for any reason
Meet (Some of) the Animals
The Palm Spring Animal Shelter has three categories on their site: Dogs, Cats, and Other Animals. Currently, in addition to cats and dogs, you can also adopt a handful of adorable hamsters and guinea pigs. To give you a sneak preview of some of the animals up for adoption this weekend, find below some of the charming creatures waiting to find a forever home!
Meet Ace
Name: ACE
Primary Breed: GERMAN SHEPHERD MIX
Age: 6 YEARS
According to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Ace knows how to mesmerize the ladies. He loves spending time with girls, is good with other dogs, and is quite the talker. He enjoys walks and is an ACE on the leash. If you’re seeking a well-behaved boy with plentiful personality, sounds like Ace is a fantastic option.
Meet Ricky
Name: RICKY
Primary Breed: AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER MIX
Age: 2 MONTHS
This gorgeous guy, Ricky, is only two months old and full of love and cuddles to give. He’s only been in the shelter for a short couple weeks and is seeking his forever home in the Coachella Valley. Please note, if you’re up for adopting Ricky, he will still need to be spayed and get some vaccinations when he becomes of-age! View more photos of Ricky + learn more by clicking his photo above.
Meet Berlardo
Name: BERLARDO
Primary Breed: DOMESTIC LONGHAIR MIX
Age: 2 YEARS
This colorful cool cat is all love. According to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter site, he is slightly shy at first but he warms up quickly. Berlardo will try his best to get your attention and will expect chin scratches in return (his favorite)! This kitten is described as a “low key sort of guy who will be happy in your home.” Sounds like a no-brainer! If you’re a cat-lover, Berlardo will be waiting to meet you this weekend at the Clear the Shelter event.
Final Plea
Not convinced you want to adopt a pet this weekend? Even city officials urge you to reconsider. Palm Springs officials pleaded in a social media post “Most of the kennels are doubled and tripled up, and they need your help!” For those that are able to adopt a dog, cat, guinea pig, or hamster – we hope to see you this weekend at the Palm Springs Clear the Shelter event. More information about the event can be found at psanimalshelter.org.
