Hurricane Irene on the move.
Hurricane Irene is making her way through the Eastern Seaboard this weekend and continues to move up the East Coast, traveling with a 75 mph wind.
The damage the hurricane left behind ranges from one end of the spectrum to the other. Some towns are left in shambles and others left with minimal flood damage. According to Craig Fugate, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, flooding will continue for several days.
So far Irene is responsible for nearly 40 deaths across the various states she passed through. Millions are left without power, hundreds of roads are closed, and thousands are left without homes.
The American Red Cross reported that it had housed at least 27,000 people along the East Coast in temporary shelters. The American Red Cross was short on blood and appealed for blood donations and pleaded for money donations. CEO Gail McGovern said, “Frankly, the Red Cross response is going to cost millions of dollars”.
The damage for the entire region is going to cost over billions of dollars. Damage for North and South Caroline alone are estimated to range from $200 million to $400 million according to a Risk assessment firm Eqecat.
According to CNN Money, the Consumer Federation of America warns those facing hurricane damage to report claims quickly and keep detailed, thorough notes on the claim, as well as any receipts for expenses spent dealing with the damage.
“The Mid-Atlantic and New England have experienced damaging hurricanes in the past, and the growth in coastal population and property values makes today’s storms even more costly,” said Institute president Robert Hartwig in a statement on Thursday.
