World’s Skinniest House

Jakub Szczesny, Polish architect, is constructing the world’s skinniest house.

The house will be built in an alley way between an apartment building and 1960s office tower in Warsaw, Poland.  “I saw the gap and just thought it needed filling. It will be used by artists,” Szczesny told the Daily Mail.

Jakub Szczesny’s skinniest house may make some of us just a tad claustrophobic.  It will be 40 feet long and only five feet wide.  It has failed to meet Polish building code and instead is classified as an “art installation.”

His design team has somehow managed to squeeze in all the necessary living areas.  The tight quarters “includes two livable floors, complete with a bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen.  It will be furnished with a kitchen table, bed, bookshelf and a ladder to connect the two floors,” according to the report.

While this is all quite impressive I can’t help but wonder why they did not install a window??  Of course there will be air conditioning, but does that make up for the lack of natural light and fresh air?

In case you were playing with the idea of moving to Poland to take the title as, “the person who lives in the skinniest home”, you are too late.  Its new resident will be Israeli writer Etgar Keret.

Keret’s primary residence is in Tel Aviv but he visits Poland about once a year.  His plans are to use the space primarily as a studio.  There is talk that while Keret is not occupying it the house will be used as an artist’s residence.

Take a look at the photos below and feel free to share your thoughts on the idea and the design itself.
