Glee Creator: Ryan Murphy, Racks Up Emmy Nominations and Real Estate!

Emmy-winning writer, director, producer Ryan Murphy (best known for creating the television shows Nip/Tuck, Popular and Glee) not only racked up Emmy nominations this morning for his hit show Glee but is apparently collecting real estate too, million dollar real estate that is!  Maybe he needs multiple homes to house all these awards…who knows.

So here is the line up for Ryan Murphy’s homes, I hope you can keep up, I barely could!

Back in May 2001 Murphy bought a Carl Matson-design house tucked away up in the hills behind the legendary Hollywood California landmark hotel Chateau Marmont Hotel built in 1929.  (If you like old Hollywood here is a little tidbit – James Dean and Natalie Wood first met at the Marmont, during a script rehearsal of “Rebel Without a Cause”.)

It’s unknown what Murphy paid for the house but it’s estimated to be around $2,000,000.  May 2008, exactly seven years later, Murphy put the property on the market with an asking price of $4,195,000.  The house did not sell until April 2011, three years later, for $2,775,000.

September 2010, a few months before Murphy sold his house in the hills; he was able to cough up $10,000,000 to live in another kind of hills, Beverly Hills that is.  Murphy’s new home was a beautiful updated and upgraded Ralph Flewelling-design Colonial Revival-style mansion.  Murphy bought the property from Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton.  The 8,434 square foot mansion was built in 1927 and contained 7 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.

Oh yea, in the midst of buying and selling houses in all kinds of hills Murphy needed a beach house of course, duh!  Laguna Beach California it is!  March 2005 Murphy paid $4,475,000 for property parcel one of two.  The first parcel he bought included the main house which is 4,500 square feet, 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.  In January 2007 Murphy bought the second parcel that included a smaller residence (guest house), which shares a swooping private driveway from the main house, for $3,340,000.  The guest house is 2,500 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

The main house and the guest house were built in the 1960s.  Murphy had the two renovated by architect Mark Singer.  Singer had his work cut out for him because if you combined the two properties you have 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, 4 fireplaces, 3 kitchens and garage space for 4 cars.  If this all sounds appealing to you you’re in luck because the house is for sale!  The asking price for the Laguna Beach property is $8,500,000.

Have I lost you yet?  I hope not because there is more…

If you’re worried Murphy is without a beach house don’t fret, he’s got it covered.  Just after Murphy spent ten big ones in 2010, March 2011 he bought a Malibu California beachfront home.  Murphy bought the house from Oscar-winner Charlize Theron (I hope you noticed yet another Murphy trend here!) for $6,562,500.

The Malibu property was built in 1930 and is 2,095 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.  There is an ocean side deck which includes a fire pit, and hot tub.  The master bedroom has vaulted ceilings, fireplace, and ocean views.  The living room also faces the water and a u-shaped kitchen that leads out to the deck overlooking the sand and sea.

Yes, I know you’re probably wondering, what’s next on the list, so am I…I’ll keep you posted!
